"Toru Takemitsu* (武満 徹 Takemitsu Tōru?, October 8, 1930 – February 20, 1996) pronounced [takeꜜmitsɯ toːɽɯ] was a Japanese composer and writer on aesthetics and music theory. Largely self-taught, Takemitsu possessed consummate skill in the subtle manipulation of instrumental and orchestral timbre. He is famed for combining elements of oriental and occident philosophy to create a sound uniquely his own, and for fusing opposites together such as sound with silence and tradition with innovation.

He composed several hundred independent works of music, scored more than ninety films and published twenty books He was also a founding member of the Jikken Kobo (experimental workshop) in Japan, a group of avant-garde artists who distanced themselves from academia and whose collaborative work is often regarded among the most influential of the 20th century.

His 1957 Requiem for string orchestra attracted international attention, led to several commissions from across the world and established his reputation as one of the leading 20th-century Japanese composers. He was the recipient of numerous awards and honours and the Toru Takemitsu Composition Award is named after him." NB.*Click to read more info on Wikipedia.

" I measure every Grief I meet"
Poem by Emily Dickinson*, (December 10, 1830 – May 15, 1886)

"I measure every Grief I meet

With narrow, probing, eyes –
I wonder if It weighs like Mine –
Or has an Easier size.

I wonder if They bore it long –

Or did it just begin –
I could not tell the Date of Mine –
It feels so old a pain –

I wonder if it hurts to live –

And if They have to try –
And whether – could They choose between –
It would not be – to die –

I note that Some – gone patient long –

At length, renew their smile –
An imitation of a Light
That has so little Oil –

I wonder if when Years have piled –

Some Thousands – on the Harm –
That hurt them early – such a lapse
Could give them any Balm –

Or would they go on aching still

Through Centuries of Nerve –
Enlightened to a larger Pain –
In Contrast with the Love –

The Grieved – are many – I am told –

There is the various Cause –
Death – is but one – and comes but once –
And only nails the eyes –

There’s Grief of Want – and grief of Cold –

A sort they call “Despair” –
There’s Banishment from native Eyes –
In sight of Native Air –

And though I may not guess the kind –

Correctly – yet to me
A piercing Comfort it affords
In passing Calvary –

To note the fashions – of the Cross –

And how they’re mostly worn –
Still fascinated to presume
That Some – are like my own."

"Măsor cu Ochi pătrunzător"
Poem de Emily Dickinson* (traducere de Ileana Mihai-Ştefănescu).

"Măsor cu Ochi pătrunzător

Orice Durere-mi iese în cale -
Mă-ntreb de cântăreşte cât a Mea
Ori mai uşoară pare.

Mă-ntreb de e răbdată mai de mult

Ori tocmai a început -
De Când o am pe a Mea - nu ştiu -
A-mbătrânit de mult

Mă-ntreb - Acei loviţi în viaţă

De-ar fi să îndure a doua oară
Şi de-ar putea alege - ar mai încerca -
Ori poate ar vrea să moară -

Pe Unii-i văd - cum suferă îndelung -

Şi-ntr-un târziu, un zâmbet au pe chip -
O imitaţie a Luminii
O pâlpâire de Opaiţ sleit -

Mă-ntreb - când Anii se adună

Milenii - peste Răni amare -
Mai pot avea cumva puterea
Să le aducă Alinare -

Ori ei străbat Veacuri de Nervi

Răscolind tainiţele firii -
Să dea peste Dureri mai mari -
Ce-ntrec Durerile Iubirii

"Write it on your heart
that every day is the best day in the year.
He is rich who owns the day, and no one owns the day
who allows it to be invaded with fret and anxiety.
Finish every day and be done with it.
You have done what you could.
Some blunders and absurdities, no doubt crept in.
Forget them as soon as you can, tomorrow is a new day;
begin it well and serenely, with too high a spirit
to be cumbered with your old nonsense.
This new day is too dear,
with its hopes and invitations,
to waste a moment on the yesterdays.*"

  19. Dear Alexa - Amalgam, the word I’ve heard at the dentist, a metallic thing, and now I understand the core meaning of it as “mixture”. The “Romance” sounds so evocative and the piano performance sounded like the tune of Japanese Koto. Lovely mixture of autumnal things. Isn’t it nice to bump into black swans on the ground?
